Steam moves & reverse line movement, explained

This is the free Line Move Cheat Sheet: why a line jumps across books in minutes, why it sometimes moves against the public, and what that does (and does not) tell you. Join the Sunday digest to get it in your welcome email.

What is a steam move?

A steam move is a fast, same-direction line change across multiple sportsbooks in a short window, usually driven by large or respected wagers. Example: a spread going from -2.5 to -3.5 at several books within minutes.

What is reverse line movement (RLM)?

RLM is when a line moves against the side receiving the majority of public bets. If most tickets are on the favorite but the line drops from -7 to -6, books may be reacting to money on the underdog.
